Hawaii Vacation - Part 2

There isn't a whole lot left to say about our vacation, but there are pictures to show. [Well, I just finished the post and realized I found a lot more to talk about than I thought I'd find!] The plane rides to and from Maui were fine, but we had to wake Micah up prematurely from his naps in the shuttle or on the plane and he was not fond of that. He cried and cried and did not want to be held so he would push away from us or try to hit us. I'm hoping the hitting thing is a phase that he will quickly pass through because I'm not sure how to stop him from doing it. He is obviously frustrated sometimes and he works himself up into a frenzy and then flails his arms and most often we're holding him so he hits our faces. Once he calmed down, though, he was perfectly fine.

We rode in style from the airport to the resort. The only shuttle available to take us was a 2008 Ford excursion stretch limousine. It seemed a little eccentric for just the five of us, but hey! It was very nice!

We saw hundreds of whales putting on a show for us all throughout the week. Sometimes they were so close and jumping out of the water that we could hear the thud of whale hitting the water. It sounded like fireworks. Midway through the week you could tell we were getting used to seeing them because we would nonchalantly look out the windows and remark "oh, there's another whale" and sometimes people would come over but not always, whereas at the beginning of the week everyone would drop what they were doing and go to the balcony. It was spectacular, though, and I loved seeing them!

Micah loved the water. Once he got his feet wet in the ocean but the waves scared him so he was content playing in the sand or kicking a ball around the grass or chasing the birds. He loved splashing around in the pool.

Our condo unit was in a different building that Dave's parent's unit, so we had to walk over there to eat. Micah was always the first one ready to go whether we were in our unit and getting ready to go over to theirs, or if he wanted some peace and quiet away from the other kids he would hop into his stroller and sit there patiently until someone started pushing him. There was a beautiful walkway along the coast that we would push him along and he loved it. It must have something to do with the weather because when I'm here at home and try to take him out for a walk he doesn't do nearly as well. Maybe it will be better in the summertime.

Dave's sister planned for everyone to cook one meal during the week so we wouldn't have to eat out every night. It was great because at the restaurants in Hawaii, one could drop $100 per couple on one meal - and doing that every night definitely adds up. So the first four nights were planned - steaks, kabobs, fish tacos and spicy pork fettuccine. One night we got babysitters and went to a Hawaiian slack-key guitar concert, which was a lot of fun. Friday night the grandparents watched all the kids so the rest of us could go out to dinner. Dave's sister and their friends went somewhere themselves and Dave and I met up with a couple we know from our church who happened to be in the same area of Hawaii at the same time we were. It was nice hanging out with them and getting to know them a little better, all while enjoying the warm Hawaiian weather and a soothing waterfall beside our dinner table. :)

A couple of the days most of us went snorkeling. It was very cool seeing all the tropical fish, especially in their habitat. I've been to zoos before and have seen some cool looking fish, but to swim with them in their own habitat was the best! Dan, David's dad, apparently saw a huge turtle one time, but we didn't see anything like that ... other than seeing a beached whale (aka: the man himself) getting tossed around by the waves while trying to fix his flipper.

Ka'anapali is a really great location for a vacation. Since David's parents have a couple units there, we will be able to go back again and again, and as the cousins get older there will be a ton of things to do. There are kayak rentals, whale watching boats, surf lessons, snorkeling right there or on boat trips to see dolphins too. There will never be a shortage of things to do with growing young boys who will have lots of energy. Whaler's Village is a also a great place with fancy little shops and ice cream stores. The resort that we stayed at has tons of activities to do, too, from the little kiddie-pool pirate ship that Micah played at to the volleyball or basketball pools or the waterslide for the older kids. It was a beautiful vacation and I'm so thankful for the Christmas present we all received 2 years ago!!

We even saw a submarine surface and sit within our view one day and after a while it drifted past.

Vacation - Part 1

Oh how I love Hawaii! I was talking with a friend today and we were thinking that vacation is not quite the right word now that we have kids. I guess it's more like a get-away, a change in routine. I bring my "work" with me now when I go away, but it sure is nice going away with family (grandparents in particular) who are happy with watching the kids while we catch some rays or get some ice cream. The grandparents were particularly happy watching the kids since they knew they would be relaxing for real the following week. They brought us along the first week but they stayed an additional week without any children or grandchildren around making their lives a whole lot noisier.

Hawaii was FABULOUS. The weather was perfect. Warm, sunny, 80 degrees. Every Single Day. I suggested for me to stay the additional week with Nana and Papa, but they didn't exactly take me up on my offer. So I'm back home now, getting back into a routine of laundry and cleaning and cooking. Spring is just around the corner, though. The weather here hasn't been so bad. It is a bit cooler, but the sun is shining!

I was a little worried about taking Micah on the plane because he had been sick with a runny, stuffy nose in the days leading up to the trip, but he did fine. On the way there he slept for two hours and stayed in his car seat the entire time. I was very thankful that we had a seat for him because he is very squirmy and strong and it would have been impossible to keep him still on our laps for six hours.

We stayed in Waikiki at the Marriott on the top (33rd) floor for the first night. There was a beautiful view from our room, but I was too scared to step too far out onto the balcony because it was a reeeally long way down! The balcony was tiny and there was a wrought-iron railing that didn't seem as strong as concrete.

Waikiki is such a fun place - lots of shops, lots of people, beautiful beaches. We got in during the afternoon, so we had dinner at an outdoor restaurant at the Marriott and then went back to the room so we could get Micah out of the sun and wait for Dave's bag to get in. His bag didn't make it from Seattle on our flight, but it came on another flight and they brought it to the Marriott that evening so he got it before we took off for Maui.

There is a lot more to tell, so I will save it for another post. So far, the first part of our trip has been excellent! I know you'll be waiting on pins and needles for the rest of our fabulous trip!

Fun with Grandma and Grandpa

We had a great time with Grandma and Grandpa - Cheri's parents. They came for 5 days last weekend and it was fantastic! Micah had so much fun playing with them, helping Grandpa do some projects around the house and reading books with Grandma. We didn't have a whole lot planned while they were here, which was good because they just wanted to spend time with Micah anyway. By the end of their visit it sounded like Micah said "Grandpa" when my dad was coming down the stairs. We were trying to teach him how to say Grandma and Grandpa all weekend - actually, even before they came I was trying to get Micah to say it. I had shown him the photos in the calendar that we had of Grandma and Grandpa and during the weekend he just wanted to carry the calendar around with him.

My dad put together Micah's tricycle that he had received for Christmas. Micah is still too short for it so his feet don't reach the pedals and he wasn't quite sure about it yet. Hopefully by the spring or summer he'll be more excited about it. We also blew up his ball pit. He had received that for Christmas as well and was pretty excited about that. Anything that has to do with balls is always a big hit for Micah. We have to be careful going up and down the stairs these days...

He decided to lounge on his teddy bears while reading his books before he fell asleep. He has been sleeping much better now so we are thankful! He tells us when he wants to take a nap using sign language and he stays quiet when we leave his room at bedtime. We keep the door open now and even if he's standing at the edge of his crib and watches us walk by, he's still usually quiet and eventually falls asleep on his own. It's wonderful!

He received a new toy from Great Gran and Great Grandpa. G-Gran sent along a ball with a happy face and it made Micah get a big smile on his face when we picked up Grandma and Grandpa from the airport. Great Grandpa wanted my parents to pick out a toy from the toy store from him, so we got a toy with balls and a hammer. He loves it! Thanks Gran and Grandpa!

Sleep Issues

Micah has been getting more teeth, which might be the reason it has been so hard to get him to go to sleep at night again. This teething thing goes on for a really long time! I can't imagine what it feels like for bones to push through skin from the inside out. We have been giving him Hylands teething tablets, which I've heard work really well. He actually really likes them, and even asks for them right before bed. Last night it took Micah one hour to finally fall asleep even though he was exhausted all evening. We started getting him ready for bed early because he was looking extremely tired, so by 7:30 he was all ready for bed. I put him in his crib and he laid right down, but the second I try to leave the room he stood up and screamed at the edge of the bed. If I would go in there and rub his head or his back and sing to him, he would lay right down again. But it takes him a really long time to fall asleep (he must get that from me). And I don't want to stand there for an hour rubbing his back and singing to him because I really want him to be able to fall asleep on his own. Dave is usually the one who puts Micah to bed, and for a while Micah was doing great. But over the past couple of weeks, he has been crying incessantly when we try to leave the room.

We do the same routine every night: change, read a book, brush teeth, go to bed. Last night Dave went to play soccer, so I had to put Micah to bed. I let him cry for a while, but he was not getting any quieter and not calming down at all, so I went in there after about 15 minutes and held him and rocked him, but it seems like it only makes him a little more hyper when I do that. He thinks about things, like the train going by and says "cuh cuh" (not quite able to do the CH sound yet!), or he says "kee kaaaah, ma ma ma" (meow) and jumps his body around when he does the meow sound. Or if he hears the garage door, he says "Da da" with a smile on his face in a really cute voice. Or he thinks about his balls and asks for a "Ba?" and wants me to let him down so he can get one. Oh, to have the racing mind of a toddler!

The other night when Dave was at worship practice and I put Micah to bed, I thought I had it all figured out! He went right to sleep when I put him down around 7:30. However, he had only had a 5 minute nap during the day - he fell asleep in the car only 3 minutes from home, stayed asleep when I took him from the car seat to his crib, but woke up minutes after I left his room. So I guess if I don't let him nap during the day at all, he would go to sleep no problem!

Does anyone have any tips on what to do differently, or how to help a 15 month old fall asleep?

Anyone want a cat?

Did you know slugs can be this big? They can, only in the northwest.

We have decided to start letting our small dog (aka our obese gray cat) outdoors. We got our two cats about 5 years ago, shortly after we got married. We never had them de-clawed because 1. How cruel is that?! and 2. We figured that once we moved into a house we would let them outside. For some reason, in the 3 years we lived in the apartment we never had any trouble with Luigi using his litter box. Oh, wait. Scratch that. We never had any problem with Luigi using the CARPET as his litter box. He did use our bath mats on occasion. So we nixed that issue by hanging our bath mats over the tub. However, now that he can't use the bath mats, he has found other places, places that are not so easy to clean, like the corners of our dining room carpet and he has torn them up and made them stink to high heaven. So, needless to say, we are not too happy with him. And now that we have a REAL child our cats don't hold the same status as they once did! So if anyone wants an overly large unsociable, inactive cat who pees everywhere, please let me know! We'd be happy to ship him off to you!

The only reason we hadn't let them out of the house since we moved here over two years ago is because we live on a fairly busy street and there are coyotes in the wetlands across the street. We wouldn't want anything THAT bad to happen to him. However, we ARE getting really tired of cleaning up his messes, so we have started letting him out in the backyard.

Just to be fair, he actually is a really cute cat (in a massive sort of way) and he does purr really, really loudly when he wants attention. Like a squeak-purr. Lately he's been laying on Dave when he's in bed. I think he must know we've been talking of getting rid of him.

Not the White Christmas I was dreaming of

I have some cute pictures from before Christmas, but I still want to share them. Micah was trying to be ever so helpful while I was baking, so he brought me the powdered sugar from the cupboard. Little did I know, the bag was already open! And within his reach! As you can see below, he got it all over the floor and himself, and later I found it was all over the back of my right leg, along with a tiny white hand print on the front of my leg. I think maybe we were listening to "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas".

I'm happy to say that I have cut back on the baked goods and have been much healthier lately! I am still keeping the idea of Hawaii in the back of my mind and I am not wanting to scare away our family. So I have still been running lately. The friend I go running with in the mornings and I took a little hiatus from our early morning jogs during the holidays, but we started up again on Wednesday and now plan to go every Wed and Friday mornings. It's a good 3 mile jog, but I did go 4 miles once by myself. I would love to work my way up to running farther and possibly run a half marathon sometime (there's one coming up in a May in Tacoma), but I haven't committed yet. A marathoner-friend told me if I sign up I'm committed and I would be driven to work towards that goal. It's a good idea. But still something I'm afraid of!

I think I can ...

I love all these balls and I really want to be able to take them with me wherever I go. Hmm...

I think I can do it.

Let's see here...

Okay, let's regroup a little.

Yes, I think I have got it! If I hold the big one right up next to my head, I can bend down and get that one last fourth ball....

Look at me!! I'm a pro!

A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! So sorry I haven't been adding anything for a while. We had a fabulous Christmas in north-eastern Seattle with Dave's sister's family, his parents and his brother. We stayed overnight on Christmas Eve and had a fun morning with an overload of gifts. Micah did well, sleeping in his own room, waking up a little early but going back to sleep on Daddy for a little while. He was up and ready to go by 7:30 - just the time that Mike and Danielle had told their boys to wait until they could come out of their rooms on Christmas morning.

It was a little obscene how many gifts were there! I guess it might be the same thing in most families if you compiled ALL of your family get-togethers into ONE huge combined family gathering. My out-of-town family sent gifts, Mike's out-of-town family sent gifts, Dave's family (of which there is really only one side) had their gifts there, and Santa brought not only stocking stuffers, but huge SACKS full of gifts for the kids. Dave and I are probably not going to go overboard with the whole Santa thing. We're thinking our kids will get the bigger gifts from us and some smaller gifts from Santa. But our nephews get the majority of their gifts from Santa and just a couple things from their parents.

Christmas this year was the year of doubles, too. Mike got two of the same GPS systems, Danielle got two pairs of silver hoop earrings, Dave got two drills, and Joen got two popcorn poppers. It was kind of strange, but I guess when you know what you want and tell more than one person, this is what happens. That's why we get gift receipts.

We had a fun New Year celebration. We dropped Micah off and Nana and Papa's for the evening and left while he was almost asleep. We went to a friend's house to hang out and eat and play games. There were only 4 couples and one of the couples cut out a little early because the wife had to work at Starbucks the next day. The rest of us stayed and played Guitar Hero 2 (super fun!), we played a newlywed-type game (all of us have been married about the same amount of time, 5-6 years), and watched the pitiful fireworks at the Space Needle (the 8 minute show turned out to be mmm... 2 minutes)! And then we were all tired and ready to go to bed after midnight hit. Such is the life of parents of young children, right?

This child continually astounds me!

It is amazing what Micah is learning and picking up on these days. For about a month now he's been saying a lot more than just ball, although that is still the favorite thing to say and the favorite thing to play with or sleep with. And still the very first thing he says when he wakes up, whether it is in the morning or after his nap - with a very cute and groggy voice. :)

But he's saying "Kee kat" and gets excited about the kitty cats and he YELLS "DADA" when he hears the garage door open and then he goes over to the door so he will be ready to show Daddy what he found (surprise! A ball!). He Meows like the cat when he hears the cat meow, but it sounds like "mum" when he does it. He doesn't really say "mama" yet, but I don't work on it with him either. I don't talk much in the third person to him.

It continually amazes us, too, what he understands. Ever since he could crawl, which was around 5 months, we taught him not to go toward the fireplace and he would shake his head if something rolled near it. He knows not to throw the balls that are hard and he knows not to push his sippy cup around on the floor (but he still does sometimes). I will ask him to put his cup on the table and he does it. A while ago, maybe two months ago, we were getting ready to leave and he had his socks in his hand, so I asked him to bring them over to me so I could put them on his feet. Dave and I were both shocked that he came right over to me with them in his hand. That was at 12 months! It is so easy to underestimate what your child comprehends. He growls like a lion when he sees one in a book. He points out balls or cats in books using his words. He loves his books again now and will constantly bring me a book throughout the day so I will read it to him.
He says "ma" for milk or more, but I know which one he means because he points. He still does sign language for those sometimes, but I think he is realizing that it's quicker just to say it. He signs "eat" at breakfast time or when I ask him if he wants to eat lunch or dinner. He knows to find a ball or two and go to the stairs when I say it's bedtime and he does the sign for "sleep" when he's tired and ready to go to bed. When I smell a stinky diaper, I tell him I need to change his diaper and he giggles and runs away from me (as if it's really comfortable to be running around like that!). He signs help, please and thank you, and he is starting give me kisses... and run away from me when I try to kiss him!

There is a little bit of a downside - he is gaining some independence. He is starting to throw tantrums when I take something away from him. He whines throughout the day if I don't understand what he wants. If he is tired or hungry throughout the day and I don't say the word "sleep" or "eat" for him to sign, he gets a little cranky. He has always been content to play pretty well on his own, but if I don't pay much attention to him, he whines. I have been busy with Christmas baking and (earlier this month) with finishing projects as Christmas presents. But I have found that I need to sit and stack things with him or roll a ball back and forth or read stories to him throughout the day and then he's fine. He really is a lot of fun almost all the time and I'm lucky to be able to spend all day with him.

Funeral

Dave's grandpa passed away recently and the memorial service was on Wednesday. He was a remarkable man. I'm sorry that I didn't hear much of the service because I was chasing a toddler around the foyer and trying to keep him from saying "BAH!" too loudly, but it was a nice service. Dinner was served afterward for the family and friends that came. I had not met most of the extended family before. It was fun meeting Mila, Micah's little second cousin (Dave's cousin Kelly's little girl), who is only a month older than Micah. I'll post pictures soon.

Hawaii may not be a pretty picture come February

I have been trying to avoid doing any holiday baking because I don't want to eat it all. And that's just what I'll be doing if we have cookies and candy and fudge floating around our house. I was doing pretty well up until last weekend. I had only made a couple batches of fudge, which I made so that I could take it to a Christmas cookie exchange and to our home group. But there are just so many things going on right now. Dave went to a friend's house on Saturday to play video games and he invited some friends, so the wife of one of the friends came over to my house so we could play with our babies and bake Christmas cookies. If I'm going to do Christmas baking I try to make sure that at least I'll have somewhere to take them, otherwise I will seriously eat them all. All Day Long. Which is not so healthy.

So, my friend Kara came over on Saturday and we made shortbread cookies, sugar cookies, and chocolate drops (or haystacks). I made her take half of them home with her so she could share them with her husband and the rest of her family. Sunday I got together with my book club friends for a gift exchange and what do you know? Part of the gift I received was Christmas cookies! I left some with my friends, but the majority came home with me. So I went to the Mom's Group meeting at the nursing home on Monday to deliver cookies and hang out with the elderly people and brought a plate of cookies with me. I also brought a plate of Christmas cookies with me to our home group meeting tonight. I have frozen some of the sugar cookies and the shortbread cookies, so at least at this point I haven't gotten into that.

I had made a couple more batches today because apparently they've been running out. I'm trying not to eat them all the time, but somehow they are diminishing. I have been giving a lot away, but still! Something has snapped inside me. I was trying NOT to do holiday baking! But then Dave thanked me the other day for making Christmas cookies because he is really enjoying them. And that made me want to make more! That was nice, I'm glad he's enjoying them. I know I am. But I looked at the calendar for the new year and realize that after all holiday-related events are over (aka, Jan. 1), I will have no more than 6.5 weeks to kick myself into high gear to prepare for Hawaii.

No Sleep

Micah and I are both a little sick right now. I am surprised Dave's not sick too because he's been staying up late and getting up early these last couple of days. I had a busy weekend, so that might have had something to do with me getting sick. I was asked to sub for one of the singers in the worship band at church on Sunday, so I had practice on Thursday night. Friday night I went to a cookie exchange with some moms from Mom's Group. Saturday afternoon I went to a play at a friend's church and Sunday I had to be at worship practice at 8am. Our church had the Christmas concert that evening, and Dave was playing guitar in the band so I went to that too.

I don't know if it's because of the congestion or because he's just not feeling well, but Micah is NOT napping for me. He seems tired, so I put him in his crib and at first he cries because he doesn't like being behind bars, but then he calms down and just plays with whatever is there in his crib - reading books, pushing balls around, or throwing things out of his crib. Then, when there's nothing left, he starts making more noise and doesn't fall asleep. I don't get it. When I'm not feeling well, I would LOVE to lay down on a mattress and nap. I especially would NOT like to jibber-jabber or scream when my throat is not feeling so well. Yesterday we had an appointment for Christmas pictures at 1:45, so I was hoping he would nap late-morning, have some lunch, and be happy for the pictures. Wishful thinking. He didn't sleep at all and he missed his lunch, but he was still very pleasant during the pictures even though he was tired. However, he wasn't very impressed with any of our sillies and only smiled nice for, mmm, one of the photos.

Any ideas on how to get a toddler to sleep during the day?!! This afternoon we went to the post office to mail our packages and on the way home he was pretty much asleep in the car. Often I will park the car in the garage, turn it off, and let him stay asleep and I'll just keep checking on him now and then and get him when he wakes up. But it is kind of cold outside now. So on the way home from the post office I tried to keep him awake and then I took him straight up to his crib when we got home. He was quiet for a little bit, but 40 minutes later (after I had tried to nap too) I realized it wasn't going to happen because he was starting to make louder noises and seemed to be getting cranky. So, I am assuming there will be no nap today. It's hard when I'm sick too because I don't feel like playing and having energy, but what is especially hard is understanding why he doesn't sleep knowing he NEEDS to in order to get rid of his cold.

Most kids like something soft and cuddly...

Micah, however, finds that the soft teddy bears or plush blankets are for wimps. He likes him a good hard baseball or a huge Scooby-Doo ball to cuddle with all night. I guess it's not so bad. It's cool to bring a ball to kindergarten, but not so cool to bring a blankie or to be sucking your thumb.

Happy American Thanksgiving!

This is the weekend of American Thanksgiving. I have been here for five years now and it is still hard to get used to how late it is. For some reason, this year I haven't been thinking as much about Christmas until now. In previous years I have been playing Christmas music all through the month of November and getting excited for Christmas, but this year I have been less excited. I guess there has been a lot going on, so I have been keeping myself busy with other things. Greg and Amanda, my brother and his wife, came to visit during the week of November 11th. I have been making large amounts of apple butter and canning them for a fundraiser for a friend. I have also been quilting a little bit, just for fun.

Despite all the busyness, I am now getting into the Christmas spirit and playing Christmas music and David has been cleaning out the garage in order to get it organized and to get our Christmas lights out of storage so that he can put them up. One of my favorite things about the Christmas season is the romance of Christmas lights.

Okay, first things first. Our visit with Greg and Amanda was wonderful. I can't be certain, but I kind of think it was Amanda's idea to come all the way out here. I love that they came. It was great to get to know Amanda better and to spend time with Greg again. We didn't do much, but I did take them to one of the first things a person who comes to Seattle has to see - Pike Place Market. We ordered drinks from the very first Starbucks and got a picture or two there and we we saw some fishermen tossing huge fish or crabs to each other. Dave and his company have moved into a new office building, so we showed them the office (even though it's still a bit messy from getting settled into it) before going out to lunch. On the last weekend that they were here we went to Bellevue for some shopping and to stay overnight at one of the hotels there. I think it was a pretty relaxing week for them (even with a 13 month old running around) and we had a great time hanging out together.

The apple butter that I am making is for a little fundraiser entitled "Jam for Sam". We know a family through the home group Dave and I are a part of who have a 4 year old boy with an immune deficiency and has had to undergo 2 bone marrow transplant surgeries. Another couple in the home group has come up with the idea of Jam for Sam and started selling different types of jam at his workplace. I wanted to help out, so she put me in charge of making the apple butter. For one thing, it reminds me of Ontario because of the Wellesley Apple Butter and Cheese Festival. I have never canned before, but I am enjoying it. Plus, it's a great cause and it's nice to be able to help out a friend.

For Thanksgiving, we went to David's sister's house. We had dinner there and actually stayed overnight. We were going to go with Micah's cousins in the morning to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in downtown Seattle, but Micah didn't sleep much during the night, so consequentially, neither did we. Thanksgiving dinner was delicious, as always. Mike and Danielle had ordered a smoked turkey and only had to reheat it for a couple hours. It was definitely a different taste, but everyone seemed to enjoy it. I wish I had taken a picture of Micah and his cousins because they all had brown and blue sweaters on and looked so cute. Sorry!

Fun Times

Pumpkin patches and farms. Halloween dress-ups. Falling asleep in comfy Target shopping carts. Walking on cold but sunny fall days. Playing with birthday toys. Micah has had a fun couple of weeks. I was able to get my tulip bulbs planted! I am excited to see what will happen in the spring! I imagine it will be like a $20 bill in my jacket pocket that I had put away for the summer and then taken out again in the fall. How exciting! "Ooh, the flowers are popping up and I forgot I even planted them!"

We had fun at the Pumpkin Patch. It has been so nice here for the past couple weeks. The weather has definitely turned cooler, but the sun has been shining and the leaves have been turning beautiful colors. I simply love this time of year.

Micah was an astronaut by day on October 31st and a Fireman by night. He was both the cutest little astronaut and fireman I have ever seen! We went to our church for a Harvest Party after handing out some candy at our house. I bought so much candy that I was afraid we were going to have a ton of it left in our house (especially with Dave's candy-nazi method of handing out candy - "take only ONE!" I grab a handfuls and fill each kid's sack with it. That would be why we ran out so quickly last year, but this year I was prepared with LOTS of candy, even though we don't stay here all night.). However, we did not have any left over because when we left to go to our church, we set it out in a box with a note: Trick or Treat! Please take ONE! I wish we had a hidden video camera on our front porch to see if that many kids came, or if the older ones just dumped it all in their bags. Well, it's fine because if we had any left over, we all know who would be eating that.... and we all know who does not NEED it. Ahem.

I have been running lately. A friend of mine from the home group that we are in ran a half marathon a couple months ago and she wants to keep in shape, so she invited me to go with her one morning. I met her at her house and we ran the loop she normally does. No. We ran PART of the loop she normally does because it is ALL HILLS and I hadn't done anything for a couple weeks, so I was DYING with the hills. But, since then, we've met and ran around my neighborhood and I've been able to do 3 miles with her. My neighborhood is completely flat. One of these days I'll attempt her dreaded, hilly neighborhood again.

Back to the Harvest Party. I liked Micah's costume the best because all the other boys were either animals of some kind, or cowboys or indians. His costume was borrowed from his cousins. With him being so little still, there weren't any games that he could do, but he did have fun in the Toddler Playroom with all the balls. He even tried coloring a little - and by that I mean tapping the crayon on the paper. I'm glad he's still too young to understand that he has a choice on what he could eat and that Halloween means CANDY and that it is yummy and delicious and horribly bad for you. I'm glad that he doesn't demand to eat only candy or nothing at all and I hope that he is never like that. I do cherish this time, because he is open to eating anything, and likes everything. Especially veggies like broccoli. And tofu. One day he will not be so open. However, as Dave says, he IS a Wolfrom, and if you've seen Papa Wolfrom's belly, you'll understand that a Wolfrom will eat anything. :)
