Happy Birthday Uncle Greg!

Today is my brother's 30th birthday and in a week my Grandpa will be turning 80. My grandparents came to visit in between the last two vacations I just wrote about. We had a couple days to clean and do laundry after we got back from Ontario before my Grandparents flew into the Seattle airport from Alaska. They first went to Winnipeg for a church conference, then to Alaska to visit my grandpa's brother (who had driven an RV with his wife from Virginia or something) and then down to visit us. We had a great time with them. It's so nice that they are able to travel so well still. My Gran is 75 and my Grandpa is 80. They are still so young and active. My Gran helped in the yard a lot with pulling weeds or watering or transplanting roses. She also helped me make some delicious raspberry freezer jam. My Grandpa worked a lot on a book about his life which he'd been hoping to finish by his birthday party next weekend. Unfortunately the one picture I had taken when they were here was deleted because the camera battery was too low to save. I didn't get any pictures of this visit, but I have a picture from when they were here last year in April.

Catching up

In an attempt to catch up on my summer, I think I'll just add some photos for the next couple of posts. There has been a lot going on this summer, but it has all been a lot of fun! We had gone back to Ontario to visit family for the first week of July, which was great. We got to see a lot of friends and family during my dad's 55th birthday party the first weekend we were there. I hung out with some of my friends and also went on a date with David.

We celebrated our six year wedding anniversary at the end of June and so we went out to dinner and went to the Stratford Festival to see Taming of the Shrew while my parents went through the torture of watching their grandson. :) The three hour play wasn't my best choice of dates, especially since we had been getting very little sleep because Micah's sleep habits were so messed up from the time change. I had been so excited about the play, but Dave, not so much. In the end, I had such a hard time following the Shakespearean language that I was just about asleep by the intermission, but Dave followed it pretty easily and could fill me in with what happened at the end.

Busy July

We had a fabulous trip to Ontario to visit my family. Micah did well on the plane rides, and had a lot of fun with Grandma and Grandpa, but he did have trouble sleeping at night. The 3 hour time difference probably hit him pretty hard.

So we got back on Saturday and had to get right back into the swing of things. This month is so busy for us. Sunday we had two softball games back to back, and then this week we have a game on Tuesday night and Thursday night and another one next Sunday. My grandparents are coming in for a visit on Friday and staying until next Wednesday and then we have another vacation to Chelan next Thursday through the end of the month. Whew. If it weren't all about vacations I think I'd go crazy!

I will update more with photos when I get more time. Micah is taking a nap right now but I have to gather stuff together so I'll be ready to take him to Nana and Papa's house while we play our game tonight.

A few new photos

It has been a while since I have posted any photos of Micah and what we've been doing. I will get a couple up tonight and then tomorrow if I get a chance I'll write a bit about what we have done over the last couple weeks.

Here's Micah trying on Daddy's slippers:

A few of these photos are from April - the one day all spring that we had nice warm, sunny weather. Micah wanted to help out when daddy was washing the cars.

Happy Birthday my Beloved

There are so many reasons why I love this man. Today seems like a good day to share.

This man loves his son and does an incredible job as his father. He is selfless and giving. He is calm with discipline and wise in teaching. He is goofy and quirky and his son absolutely adores him.

This man is a great spiritual leader. He loves the Lord. He is generous, always wanting to help those in need. He likes to pose questions that make you think.

This man is quick and witty and always makes others laugh. He is sarcastic and funny, and he gets away with it. He is a lot fun to be around. He makes others feel at ease.

This man is an intelligent businessman. He is trustworthy. He knows his stuff. He has great relationships with his employee and his clients.

This man is a strong and loving husband. He is thoughtful and caring. He always opens the door for me. He gives of himself in so many ways. He cares for me when I am sick. He loves me when I'm tired. He enjoys my company. He shares his life with me, the good things and the not so good things. He is enthusiastic about my latest hobbies and helps me achieve goals I never knew I had.

I am so in love with this man! Happy Birthday, David.

Easter

Every time I go away for any length of time David always takes on some kind of house project. It makes me feel like I should go away more often! But I try not to expect it so that if it doesn't happen, I won't be disappointed. When I went away for the Women's Retreat, David organized the guest room to be more kid-friendly as Micah's play room. We picked up the cute little kid's table at the benefit auction for Lighthouse Christian School, a school that David does some work for.

Saturday there was a community-wide Easter Egg Hunt in our neighborhood. A friend of mine is now on the community board so she planned it all and pulled it off - it was a lot of fun. Micah was actually too young to participate, but I was there to help, so he was with me. I just happened to bring an Easter basket with us... and he got into it!

Sunday morning Micah and I went to church to meet Daddy there. David played guitar for both the Good Friday service and the Easter morning service. I was scheduled to work in the nursery, so Micah and I enjoyed Easter morning with lots of little kids, play doh, and flying cars! Here is the handsome little guy all dressed up in his Sunday best.

Micah had another Easter Egg hunt at his cousin's house.

Here comes Jack, swooping in to steal the egg Micah had his eye on!

Hawaii Vacation - Part 2

There isn't a whole lot left to say about our vacation, but there are pictures to show. [Well, I just finished the post and realized I found a lot more to talk about than I thought I'd find!] The plane rides to and from Maui were fine, but we had to wake Micah up prematurely from his naps in the shuttle or on the plane and he was not fond of that. He cried and cried and did not want to be held so he would push away from us or try to hit us. I'm hoping the hitting thing is a phase that he will quickly pass through because I'm not sure how to stop him from doing it. He is obviously frustrated sometimes and he works himself up into a frenzy and then flails his arms and most often we're holding him so he hits our faces. Once he calmed down, though, he was perfectly fine.

We rode in style from the airport to the resort. The only shuttle available to take us was a 2008 Ford excursion stretch limousine. It seemed a little eccentric for just the five of us, but hey! It was very nice!

We saw hundreds of whales putting on a show for us all throughout the week. Sometimes they were so close and jumping out of the water that we could hear the thud of whale hitting the water. It sounded like fireworks. Midway through the week you could tell we were getting used to seeing them because we would nonchalantly look out the windows and remark "oh, there's another whale" and sometimes people would come over but not always, whereas at the beginning of the week everyone would drop what they were doing and go to the balcony. It was spectacular, though, and I loved seeing them!

Micah loved the water. Once he got his feet wet in the ocean but the waves scared him so he was content playing in the sand or kicking a ball around the grass or chasing the birds. He loved splashing around in the pool.

Our condo unit was in a different building that Dave's parent's unit, so we had to walk over there to eat. Micah was always the first one ready to go whether we were in our unit and getting ready to go over to theirs, or if he wanted some peace and quiet away from the other kids he would hop into his stroller and sit there patiently until someone started pushing him. There was a beautiful walkway along the coast that we would push him along and he loved it. It must have something to do with the weather because when I'm here at home and try to take him out for a walk he doesn't do nearly as well. Maybe it will be better in the summertime.

Dave's sister planned for everyone to cook one meal during the week so we wouldn't have to eat out every night. It was great because at the restaurants in Hawaii, one could drop $100 per couple on one meal - and doing that every night definitely adds up. So the first four nights were planned - steaks, kabobs, fish tacos and spicy pork fettuccine. One night we got babysitters and went to a Hawaiian slack-key guitar concert, which was a lot of fun. Friday night the grandparents watched all the kids so the rest of us could go out to dinner. Dave's sister and their friends went somewhere themselves and Dave and I met up with a couple we know from our church who happened to be in the same area of Hawaii at the same time we were. It was nice hanging out with them and getting to know them a little better, all while enjoying the warm Hawaiian weather and a soothing waterfall beside our dinner table. :)

A couple of the days most of us went snorkeling. It was very cool seeing all the tropical fish, especially in their habitat. I've been to zoos before and have seen some cool looking fish, but to swim with them in their own habitat was the best! Dan, David's dad, apparently saw a huge turtle one time, but we didn't see anything like that ... other than seeing a beached whale (aka: the man himself) getting tossed around by the waves while trying to fix his flipper.

Ka'anapali is a really great location for a vacation. Since David's parents have a couple units there, we will be able to go back again and again, and as the cousins get older there will be a ton of things to do. There are kayak rentals, whale watching boats, surf lessons, snorkeling right there or on boat trips to see dolphins too. There will never be a shortage of things to do with growing young boys who will have lots of energy. Whaler's Village is a also a great place with fancy little shops and ice cream stores. The resort that we stayed at has tons of activities to do, too, from the little kiddie-pool pirate ship that Micah played at to the volleyball or basketball pools or the waterslide for the older kids. It was a beautiful vacation and I'm so thankful for the Christmas present we all received 2 years ago!!

We even saw a submarine surface and sit within our view one day and after a while it drifted past.

Vacation - Part 1

Oh how I love Hawaii! I was talking with a friend today and we were thinking that vacation is not quite the right word now that we have kids. I guess it's more like a get-away, a change in routine. I bring my "work" with me now when I go away, but it sure is nice going away with family (grandparents in particular) who are happy with watching the kids while we catch some rays or get some ice cream. The grandparents were particularly happy watching the kids since they knew they would be relaxing for real the following week. They brought us along the first week but they stayed an additional week without any children or grandchildren around making their lives a whole lot noisier.

Hawaii was FABULOUS. The weather was perfect. Warm, sunny, 80 degrees. Every Single Day. I suggested for me to stay the additional week with Nana and Papa, but they didn't exactly take me up on my offer. So I'm back home now, getting back into a routine of laundry and cleaning and cooking. Spring is just around the corner, though. The weather here hasn't been so bad. It is a bit cooler, but the sun is shining!

I was a little worried about taking Micah on the plane because he had been sick with a runny, stuffy nose in the days leading up to the trip, but he did fine. On the way there he slept for two hours and stayed in his car seat the entire time. I was very thankful that we had a seat for him because he is very squirmy and strong and it would have been impossible to keep him still on our laps for six hours.

We stayed in Waikiki at the Marriott on the top (33rd) floor for the first night. There was a beautiful view from our room, but I was too scared to step too far out onto the balcony because it was a reeeally long way down! The balcony was tiny and there was a wrought-iron railing that didn't seem as strong as concrete.

Waikiki is such a fun place - lots of shops, lots of people, beautiful beaches. We got in during the afternoon, so we had dinner at an outdoor restaurant at the Marriott and then went back to the room so we could get Micah out of the sun and wait for Dave's bag to get in. His bag didn't make it from Seattle on our flight, but it came on another flight and they brought it to the Marriott that evening so he got it before we took off for Maui.

There is a lot more to tell, so I will save it for another post. So far, the first part of our trip has been excellent! I know you'll be waiting on pins and needles for the rest of our fabulous trip!

Fun with Grandma and Grandpa

We had a great time with Grandma and Grandpa - Cheri's parents. They came for 5 days last weekend and it was fantastic! Micah had so much fun playing with them, helping Grandpa do some projects around the house and reading books with Grandma. We didn't have a whole lot planned while they were here, which was good because they just wanted to spend time with Micah anyway. By the end of their visit it sounded like Micah said "Grandpa" when my dad was coming down the stairs. We were trying to teach him how to say Grandma and Grandpa all weekend - actually, even before they came I was trying to get Micah to say it. I had shown him the photos in the calendar that we had of Grandma and Grandpa and during the weekend he just wanted to carry the calendar around with him.

My dad put together Micah's tricycle that he had received for Christmas. Micah is still too short for it so his feet don't reach the pedals and he wasn't quite sure about it yet. Hopefully by the spring or summer he'll be more excited about it. We also blew up his ball pit. He had received that for Christmas as well and was pretty excited about that. Anything that has to do with balls is always a big hit for Micah. We have to be careful going up and down the stairs these days...

He decided to lounge on his teddy bears while reading his books before he fell asleep. He has been sleeping much better now so we are thankful! He tells us when he wants to take a nap using sign language and he stays quiet when we leave his room at bedtime. We keep the door open now and even if he's standing at the edge of his crib and watches us walk by, he's still usually quiet and eventually falls asleep on his own. It's wonderful!

He received a new toy from Great Gran and Great Grandpa. G-Gran sent along a ball with a happy face and it made Micah get a big smile on his face when we picked up Grandma and Grandpa from the airport. Great Grandpa wanted my parents to pick out a toy from the toy store from him, so we got a toy with balls and a hammer. He loves it! Thanks Gran and Grandpa!
